Iowa DOT has announced the successful deployment of Qmarkets’ innovation management software, with the launch of their Research Ideas Website. Their goal is to crowdsource ideas from their stakeholders, both internal and external to DOT, to increase engagement and transparency throughout the organization.
Iowa, United States – The Iowa Department of Transportation – a government agency that assures that transportation in Iowa gets people and goods where they need to go safely, efficiently and conveniently – has launched an open innovation platform to harness the wisdom of all relevant stakeholders throughout the state.
The DOT needed a platform that would allow them to engage audiences both inside and outside of their agency in one seamless interface by utilizing internal open innovation software and external open innovation software. However, it was important that some areas of the tool would only be accessible to internal DOT employees. Qmarkets was selected due to strong functionality in this area and experience working with public sector organizations on similar projects.
Utilizing Qmarkets’ field-proven best practices, DOT tailored the idea crowdsourcing platform to follow a simple four-step process. Once an idea is submitted, it moves to the collaboration and evaluation phase where users share feedback via intuitive social features and help identify the best solutions through crowd voting functionality. The best ideas are then moved to the development phase, where they are refined and modified before eventually becoming an active project.

Iowa DOT Research is encouraging innovation in transportation and the submission of ideas relating to all aspects of transport and its related infrastructure, through research, implementation, and technology transfer efforts. So far, the platform has received over 60 idea submissions and 129 votes, from 20+ submitters in the space of just three weeks.
